Sixth Dean, John Owen, was a man of diverse interests who excelled in many pursuits. He was skillful in sports; as a student, being Captain of the University of Nottingham' s teams of both soccer and cricket, and later an avid golfer. As a graduate student and faculty member he was in the forefront of his field of semiconductor materials. As a faculty member at OSU he was an inspirational and compassionate leader serving as a professor from 1975-83, as the head of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1978-89, as Dean of the College of Engineering from 1990-97, and Vice Chancellor of OCATE from 1985-97. John was renowned for his ability to quote Shakespeare and many other writers and poets. He gave lectures on D.H. Lawrence. A favorite quotation was from his compatriot A.E. Houseman: "Malt says more than Milton can, to justify God' s ways to man."
